Guilty

I have just finished my part time teaching which was conducted for migrant workers in Hong Kong. I could not believe my students gave me a gift. I did not expect this and hope nothing from them.

I am always worried about their being, working in Hong Kong as domestic workers, 21st century slavery is just hard. Some of my students have to accept the non standard salary and sometimes harassment too. How could I accept their gift without feeling guilty?

Being a full time student in Hong Kong and holding Indonesian passport

After two years studying at the HKIEd, now its time for me to join the immersion programme that I promised I will duly join. I was so grateful that I am going to York along with one of my best mates. I cannot ask for more than this.

I realised that my visit visa expired early this year and I decided to apply for the visit visa first before the student visa.

Wehey, finally after one month I received an email saying that I can collect my passport.

Guess what, I didnt get the visa that I requested, I got a 6 months visa only. I got really angry calling them names ....in my heart Bloody cheek!!!

I went straight to the UKvisa website and complained, saying that not all applicants want to stay and live in the UK and how how much I love Hong Kong, got no reply whatsoever! I asked Paul to send one as well, to 3 different emails. He got a reply saying that an email query will be handled after 20 working days. What a silly policy...what if I had an urgent matter then, what should I do? Call a service centre which is not free and had to wait for several minutes/dials before answered?

Well, nevermind, I just reminded myself maybe its my fault after all, maybe there's something that I forgot to include with my form.

This did not deter me from making another application for student visit visa. I followed all the suggestions on filling out the form from the HKIED Intl' Office.

Just after 15 days, I got an email informing me to collect my passport. I was surprised that they crossed the 6 month visit visa and sticked a new 5 year visit visa. So, what's this tell you?

Do you think they checked my application properly?
Do you think they take my complain emails seriously?

NO

After this I have another blow. I got my student visit visa valid for less than 180 days. While one of my friends got it exactly 180 days, yeah okay we hold different national passports. There's no significant reason to differentiate us, is there? Well, I asked them to provide me a reason for this decision.

Anyway, I went to HK immigration last week. I have to apply early because I need to apply for schengen visa when I get back from the summer break in August 2009.

Guess what? I was supposed to provide a letter stating the reason why I need to extend our visa 3 months before the expiry date, but I left it at home. As soon as I came to the counter, she pointed out something else. I forgot to ask Paul to sign his form. I apologize for that and ready to take the forms back.

BUT...

She didnt do that!!!

She said that I need to write "I, Reni K. McMahon, is the wife of Paul J. McMahon and will ask him to collect the visas and sign the form" thats it!!!

She did not ask me the reason for this application and she did not ask me to come back either. She just told me to make sure Paul pick up the visas.

BRILLIANT!

I LOVE HONG KONG!

AND
one more thing...they didnt keep our passport. Last year they kept them. I dont know why, new policy maybe?

We have to cancel our trip to Dublin because of this mess...too many things to prepare!

Ohhh another thing, I cant apply for the schengen visa just yet have to come back in September but told them (again, by face to face and email) that I wont be in Hong Kong in that month, so they pity me and asked me to apply in Aug...phewwww what a relieve, otherwise Ill lose 150 pounds, an advance fee for the trip.

Yeah this is a journey of an Indonesian who likes to apply for many different visas and with little experience.

I hope we all can learn something here

Finished and looking...

I have been in the house for the last three days cleaning, cooking and facebooking. Now, I am blogging. Isnt this great?! I have just finished the semester and cannot wait for the new semester abroad.

What I am planning to do is doing a photo project in the house, some kind of sill photos project. I will try to put things in front of my camera, things that are ordinary but they can look mysterious and interesting if they arrange in the right position. Yeah I will do it today after I finish with the teaching materials prep for this coming Sunday.

Freedom needed

Eventually I have my freedom from studying and testing.

The last test that I did is on language proficiency for language teachers, it was OK, actually I dont know for sure. The thing is that I didnt really prepare myself for the test and ended up regretting the whole thing. My carelessness, stupidity and ignorant. I thought it was going to be easy or at least medium to easy level, but it was not even closer to medium level. It was hard!

Now, that I have finished the whole semester, I need to catch up with my writing and reading.

Just Life

There's a feeling of uncertainty growing inside me each day. As I realised how many years I've spent studying for a range of different subjects, from tourism, hotel management, public relations and now education. Pheww...seems that Ill never work and earn something.

Sky Diving - Sydney, Oct 2008

I didn't know what to expect but a free fall at 14,000 feet was quite quick and very expensive to do.

If you think you want to do it and you have the guts for it, just do it, but remember the journey up is totally different to when you free falling.

The journey up for me was too scary because they opened the rolling window to let people jump at different altitude and at the same time we all watched the plane went up and up higher.....

At the end, when we landed, I felt a sudden rush of excitement and felt that my whole body reunited, but the whole thing was too fast...so no wonder people jump for several times.....

Hunting for a house ...again....

We have been hunting for a house for two years ....well before it was like just LOOKING and started to think maybe we should apply for a mortgage. We did and successfully accepted. Now, we are looking at different twenty something websites so far and down to five houses.

It was a hard work.

We bumped into this one:

http://www.vebra.com/home/search/vdetails.asp?src=agent&fd=418&bd=0&db=1&cl=578&pid=15682974

Judge it from the look of it, its cheap right? But why it hasn't sold?

Take a good look at the map and check what's in front of it?

Now you know.

We couldnt really make up our mind what we want to start with. We started with a general idea of 3 to 4 bedrooms, en-suite, a garden and a garage. However, as we browsed for more sites and looked for more houses available out there, we started to like the idea of a cottage. Then, we looked around the midlands, which offers a great selection of black and white cottages.

Then, we looked at barn conversion and their massive kitchen and modern living area, we thought, yes that's it, that's what we wanted!

Oh no....we wanted a different one this time.

Try this one:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-25323827.html

Oh no, not this one either....take a look at the building next to it.

How about this one?

Ahh I wont tell you just yet....

The Hong Kong Institute of Education Library

What I like the most from HKIED (other than the people) is the library.

Its got everything from children's literature to Leonardo Da Vinci's works (is it going to be a long list?). Well, its just great!!! 4 floors and packed with fun and boring books! So, its perfect, there is always something for everyone, right?

I like to browse through the travel and history section, as well as the non-fiction and english language shelves. And recently the children's lit for my presentation and tutorial works.

So, obviously I borrow quite a wide range of books and right now Im borrowing 17 books. So, again I went to the counter many times, right?

HOwever, I experienced a weird incident when I went to check out some books on Thursday. I wanted to read Salman Rushdie and a book on linguistics. As usual I said "return" for teh otehr three books that I finished reading, but slightly off tune and she looked at me for a few second. I said "return please!".

She seemed OK with that and I presented 2 books followed by "borrow please!"

She took my student card and HANDED it back to me.

With only one second gap, "Oh let me see!" and grabbed my card back!

She checked the name and photo on it and said "IS THIS YOURS?"

I was dumbfounded and nodded!

She looked at me carefully and handed it back!

I was like, WTF - what was she thinking? What in the world that somebody wants to steal/use other's ppl card.

I will start to remember people that I dont like then....
